As people begin to come back to QCC’s campus and stop into the Harrington Learning Center (HLC), they will notice a colorful change. Earlier this month the stairs leading into the HLC have taken on a multi-colored hue. Already the steps are generating excitement as people stop by to take selfies.

According to Shauna Connelly, president of the Multicultural Club and the Criminal Justice Club the “Diversity Steps,” idea came about in fall of 2020 during one of the first Multicultural Club meetings.

“One of our advisors, Judith D’Angelo, showed us a picture of stairs with encouraging words on the risers. Everybody loved the idea,” Ms. Connelly said.

Ms. Connelly began researching different stair designs and stumbled upon rainbow stairs. She brought the idea back to the Multicultural Club where it was well-received. Ms. Connelly thought this would be a great to involve the Criminal Justice Club, forming a collaborative project. Student Trustee Tara Rudolph also volunteered her assistance and the assistance of the Black Student Union.

Upon presentation to QCC leadership, they embraced the idea and supported the project.

“This project is a celebration of the diversity of our student body,” said QCC President Luis G. Pedraja, Ph.D.
