The Writing Center is grounded in the belief that authentic student writing is essential to learning. Writing involves grappling with ideas, developing original perspectives, and learning to express complex thinking clearly and effectively. These human elements remain central to all writing, even as we recognize that generative AI can play a limited, supportive role in academic work when used responsibly and ethically. It can serve as a tool, for example, for brainstorming, planning, or reviewing college writing assignments when its use aligns with course and faculty guidelines. When we refer to generative AI in this statement, we mean platforms that can generate text, ideas, or feedback such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot, which are often used to assist with writing and research tasks.
The Writing Center also acknowledges the importance for students to develop AI literacy, which means understanding what these tools can and cannot do, and how to use them ethically, critically, and effectively. This includes being responsible in college writing assignments by following course policies. Building this awareness not only supports success at QCC but also prepares students to navigate AI responsibly beyond QCC.
• Writing Center tutors will assist with assignments that involve generative AI only if the professor has explicitly stated in the course or assignment guidelines that AI use is permitted.
• If AI use is not clearly allowed, tutors will focus on supporting students in their own authentic writing process, including brainstorming, drafting, and revising.
• Tutors will not provide writing assistance that conflicts with faculty instructions.
• Tutors may assist students in using college-supported AI tools available in Microsoft Word, such as Microsoft Editor and Draft Coach.*
• If students are unsure whether AI use is permitted in a class or assignment, tutors will encourage them to ask their professor for clarification.
*These built-in tools provide feedback and suggestions to help students revise their own writing and are different from generative AI platforms that produce original text.
