When Kerry-Ann Morrison enrolled at QCC to pursue a healthcare degree, she didn't expect to uncover another interest: history. After a few weeks of her African American History course, she was hooked!
Learning about the ties between Western Africa and her native country of Jamaica especially piqued her interest.
"It's like doing a jigsaw puzzle, putting together all the different pieces. You see how we really are all connected at some point," said Kerry-Ann.
Professor of History Ben Wendorf praised Kerry-Ann as "super engaged, always with insightful writings and contributions to our discussions, and really exemplifies the kind of curiosity you love to see in a classroom."
Kerry-Ann admitted that she was nervous about coming to school as an older student, but having a positive experience in the history course made her feel more comfortable in the classroom.
"I like the environment at QCC. The professors are very understanding and patient. You have freedom to express yourself," Kerry-Ann shared.
In addition to her passion for learning, Kerry-Ann loves to help others. She is certified as a Personal Care Attendant (PCA) and works as a remote video monitor technician for UMass Memorial Health. In this role, she enjoys getting to know people and hearing the different stories of patients and their families. She plans to further her career with a degree from QCC, with the end goal of becoming a registered nurse.
As a mother, Kerry-Ann relies on a dedicated work ethic to balance family, school, and her job. She acknowledged coworkers who are also in school and have provided valuable insights into the college experience. She also draws on her faith as a source of motivation and guidance. With her first semester complete, she has learned to set a reasonable pace for herself and take things one day at a time to avoid burnout.
"I want something better for my children and I want to provide for them," said Kerry-Ann.
