Director of Student Accessibility Services Kristie Proctor

In an ever-changing world, Student Accessibility Services (SAS) is here to ensure that as QCC moves forward, it incorporates and includes all abilities.

In addition to providing students with accommodations and offering services such as sign language interpretation, SAS looks at policies and procedures to make sure everyone can participate and that all content is designed for the widest range of users.

Director of Student Accessibility Services & Assistive Technology Kristen Proctor stressed that while meeting the needs of students and staff has become increasingly complex, the department is always happy to answer questions and share research. Proctor also commended faculty and staff for being responsive, whether it's through allowing fidget toys and noise-cancelling headphones in class or offering virtual or lower stimulus event options. Last year's implementation of AIM software also streamlined the processes for accommodations, making it easier for both students and faculty.

Part of this work is reducing the stigma of disability. SAS has been holding training series on neurodiversity as well as a campaign to increase not just awareness, but acceptance of autism. These efforts have opened up many conversations that affect how those in the QCC community interact with each other.

Proctor noted that SAS is comprised of a dedicated and talented team that operates with a growth mindset. This has contributed to recent departmental successes: partnerships with local schools have increased and staff are regularly presenting on accessibility issues.

"I’ve been in this type of role for over 30 years and I’m still intrigued and interested in learning about people’s lives and their stories," said Proctor. "Many times, disability is part of that. Sometimes their identity is more than their ability. But it's great to see where they’ve come from and their aspirations."
