WORCESTER, MA – April 23, 2025 – Vice President of Strategic Enrollment and Student Engagement Michelle Tufau Afriyie has won the Rising Star - Executive award from the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). The recognition is part of AACC’s annual Awards of Excellence. According to the AACC, the Rising Star – Executive award is given to an administrator who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership and improved student experiences.

“We are thrilled that Michelle has received the Rising Star award for her unwavering dedication to student success at QCC. She truly understands our student population and uses her strategic vision to innovate our processes and programs to meet their needs,” said QCC President Dr. Luis Pedraja. “Additionally, Michelle has improved workflow and communication between the departments under her purview and fostered a culture where employees feel valued and empowered.”

Tufau Afriyie has been at QCC for close to 20 years, starting as the director of financial aid and steadily advancing through key leadership roles within the enrollment division. She now oversees admissions, records and registration, financial aid and student services. She also led the college’s $2.25 million, five-year Title III Grant: Increasing Student Persistence and Completion by Improving Student Information Systems and Management Structures. Through this initiative, she has spearheaded efforts to transform student orientation, acclimation and support by removing barriers, streamlining processes, and enhancing the technological infrastructure.

“Being recognized by the AACC is an incredible honor. QCC has been my professional home for nearly two decades, and I’ve seen firsthand how community colleges transform lives. This award is a reflection of our mission in action,” said Tufau Afriyie, adding, “I’ve had the privilege of working with passionate colleagues who share my belief that every student deserves the opportunity to succeed. I’m proud to be part of a community that continues to innovate, meet students where they are and help them realize what’s possible.”

Earlier this year, Tufau Afriyie finalized a partnership with Worcester Public Schools (WPS), ensuring graduates of WPS received guaranteed acceptance. She also designed QCC’s Success Center, a hub that supports students throughout their academic journey by providing personalized guidance and holistic support services.
