English as a Second Language

English as Second Language (ESL) students who require ESL classes will be given the LOEP (Levels of English Proficiency) test to determine their placement in ESL classes. Students placing into Academic Level 3 and students who have completed Academic Level 2 will be eligible to take the math portion of the placement test. After completing the ESL sequence students register for ENG095 and will be exempt from the college reading requirement.

About the ESL Test

Following a brief interview, students begin testing by completing a short writing sample on a specific topic.

  • There is no time limit.
  • Students may not use a dictionary.

Students will then take the LOEP (Levels of English Proficiency) test which helps place students into an appropriate level of Basic or Academic English as a Second Language. The test is computerized and has two parts.

  • The Sentence Meaning test measures how well students understand word meanings.
  • The Reading Comprehension test measures how well students understand what they read.
  • There is no time limit.

Placement into an ESL level depends on the LOEP test scores, the writing sample and the short interview. Placement results are generally available immediately upon completion of the test.

ESL students can retest with permission from the Coordinator of the Assessment Center or by recommendation of an ESL faculty member.
