Quinsigamond Community College’s Career & Transfer Services recently hosted the Health and Human Services Direct Care Career Expo, a dynamic event that welcomed over 150 participants eager to explore meaningful career paths in public service and direct care.
Sponsored by MassHire and the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services, the expo brought together representatives from a wide range of state agencies and institutions, offering students and job seekers firsthand insight into careers that make a difference in the lives of others.
Participants had the opportunity to engage with professionals from agencies such as:
- Department of Youth Services (DYS)
DYS representatives emphasized the rewarding nature of their work, noting the personal growth and fulfillment that comes from helping youth navigate challenging circumstances. With in-house training and only a high school diploma required, DYS offers a strong entry point into public safety and upward mobility within the field. - Department of Mental Health (DMH)
DMH highlighted the importance of passion and empathy in their roles. Staff spoke about the supportive, multicultural environment and the extensive training available. Opportunities at facilities like the Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital include roles such as Mental Health Workers, which accept a variety of educational backgrounds and focus on personal and professional development. - Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA)
DTA professionals described their work as a bridge to resources, requiring compassion and the ability to navigate difficult conversations. With hybrid schedules, flexible hours, and high employee retention, DTA offers roles like Economic Assistance Caseworker, which starts at $70,000 annually and may accept an associate degree with relevant experience.
Other participating agencies included:
- Department of Children and Families (DCF)
- Department of Developmental Services (DDS)
- Massachusetts Commission for the Blind
- Massachusetts State Police
- QCC Human Resources and Veteran Affairs
Attendees left the expo with a deeper understanding of the diverse career paths available in health and human services, many of which offer on-the-job training, career advancement, and the chance to make a lasting impact. Whether just starting out or looking to pivot into a more purpose-driven role, the event showcased how these careers can be both professionally and personally rewarding.
