Faculty, staff, and students gathered last month to celebrate Professor of Engineering & Sciences Dadbeh Bigonahy, who dedicated over four decades of his life to QCC and its students.

"You haven't just been a respected educator; you've been a mentor and advocate," QCC President Dr. Luis Pedraja said. "Your legacy will continue to inspire the community for years to come."

Colleagues including Professor of Biology Ben Benton, Associate Professor of Physics My Nguyen, Vice President of Academic Affairs Kathy Rentsch, and Professor of Environmental\Physical Science Anita Soracco reflected on Bigonahy's legacy at the college.

Some described Bigonahy's office, famously filled to the brim with books, and how it reflects his lifelong passion for learning, which he shares with students and colleagues alike. Others noted his fierce advocacy for the engineering program, evident in his collaboration with Worcester Polytechnic Institute and his pursuit of the latest technology to prepare students who would become the next generation of engineers.

"He puts students first every time. He goes the extra mile to ensure they have every opportunity to succeed," Benton said.

Recent graduate Abigail Gumlaw spoke about Bigonahy's intimidating reputation for rigorous coursework and exceptionally high standards. Gumlaw was pleased to find that while he lived up to the reputation, he also offered genuine support and encouragement.

Many spoke about the orchids that became Bigonahy's signature gift to colleagues at QCC. Not everyone could keep them alive, but they all felt the sentiment of welcoming and belonging.

"You have such a special way of connecting people," Nguyen said. "And you welcomed me into your life and your family. You're more than just a colleague."

Bigonahy expressed gratitude to many, including his family and the individuals who helped him originally come to the United States from Iran.

"I want to thank Quinsigamond for giving me the opportunity...to help our students as much as we can. Everyone in my QCC family - I love you all," Bigonahy said.
