How did QCC impact your journey?

QCC allowed me to pursue a career in education. The campus location, classes, and professors supported me as I navigated being a first-generation college student balancing motherhood. I was able to take what I learned and transfer it to Worcester State. In school and beyond I leaned on the message of a professor when things got tough; We build habits through our actions, whether we let ourselves quit or convince ourselves to power through. I chose to build up the habit of powering through.

What are you currently doing?

Currently, I am an educator and artist who holds a bachelor’s degree from Worcester State College and a master’s degree from Harvard Graduate School of Education. I have taught primarily 4th grade for 11 years. Within my artwork and murals, I focus on visual storytelling and often the representation of Black and brown people through portraiture.

My work has earned me the YWCA Eskine Award, MAEA Massachusetts Community Art Educator of the Year, Worcester’s 40 Under 40 award, and the key to the city [of Worcester]. For the past year, I have served on the board for ArtsWorcester. My biggest accomplishment by far has been raising my daughter, a 17-year-old going into her senior year. She is an incredible young woman who makes me proud every day.

What advice would you give to current students and fellow alumni?

I would remind others to invest in themselves. Everything you learn, every class you take, and all the energy you use to focus on becoming a better version of yourself is an investment in a better future. While you are working hard to build your better future, don’t forget to give yourself grace, ask for help whenever needed, and take time to rest and reflect. Be proud of yourself for everything you’ve accomplished so far.

How can we connect with you and support you?

I am open to exploring areas where we can connect, which could include being a guest on a panel, community mural, etc. Please feel free to follow me on my social media platforms to see my work.
