June was a dynamic and energizing month, marked by meaningful engagement with our community partners, regional and national higher education leaders, and our students.
Earlier this month I had the pleasure of attending the Greater Worcester Community Foundation Annual Meeting. This gathering highlighted the strength of our region’s philanthropic community and reinforced the important role that partnerships play in advancing educational access, workforce development, and community well-being.
Additionally, June is a month when two organizations I participate in convene for their annual summer retreats. The first was the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) Summer Retreat. NECHE is a longstanding accrediting body that plays a vital role in ensuring quality, innovation, and student success across higher education institutions. During the retreat, we focused on shaping policies and examining updated standards in response to the rapidly evolving higher education landscape.
I followed up the NECHE retreat with the President’s Council Summer Retreat, which brought together fellow presidents from across the region. This time allowed for thoughtful dialogue on shared challenges and opportunities facing our institutions, a review of last year’s strategic priorities, the progress we’ve made and the direction we are headed in FY27. Highlights from the retreat included a conversation with Amanda Fuchs Miller, a leading expert and advocate in higher education policy, who discussed federal grants; as well as conversations with the Massachusetts Secretary of Education, Dr. Stephen Zrike Jr., and Massachusetts Commissioner of Higher Education Dr. Noe Ortega.
Later in June, I helped celebrate one of the most inspiring moments of the month, our HiSET/GED Graduation. QCC’s commitment to offering free classes for adult learners preparing for their high school equivalency exams continues to transform lives. It was an honor to recognize the determination and resilience of our graduates, whose achievements reflect the very heart of our mission.
Finally, amid a full and rewarding schedule, I also took time late in the month for a vacation to recharge and regroup. This pause provided an opportunity for reflection and renewed focus as we prepare for the important work ahead this fall.
As we move further into the summer months, I hope this season offers everyone an opportunity to rest, recharge, and spend meaningful time with family and friends. These moments of pause are essential, not only for reflection, but for renewing the energy and focus that will carry us into the busy months ahead.
I look forward to all that lies ahead and the continued progress we will make together in support of our students, our community, and our shared future.
