May is always one of the most meaningful months of the academic year, and this year was no exception. It was filled with moments of celebration, achievement, and connection paired, for me personally, with a time of reflection and transition.
On June 1, 2026, I shared with our community my decision to retire next year, effective July 31, 2027. This announcement was made with deeply mixed emotions. Serving in this role has been one of the greatest honors of my career, and while I look ahead with gratitude and optimism, this moment also carries a bittersweet awareness as I begin to experience these milestones as “lasts” or nearly so.
That perspective made this May message especially meaningful.
The month of May began with the TLSD Conference (May 1), highlighting innovative teaching and learning practices, followed by our Athletic Ceremony, recognizing the dedication and accomplishments of our student athletes. These events highlight the well-rounded student experience we are committed to supporting.
A number of academic recognition events underscored the strength of our programs and the persistence of our students:
- Honors & Awards Ceremony (May 6) and Honors Showcase (May 11) celebrated academic excellence and scholarly achievement across disciplines.
- The Psi Beta Induction Ceremony (May 4) and participation in the 2026 PTK All-Massachusetts Academic Team recognition at the State House (May 7) demonstrated our students’ leadership and academic distinction at both institutional and statewide levels.
Equally important were our program-specific milestone ceremonies. These included pinning ceremonies for Paramedic (May 6), Respiratory Care (May 11), Surgical Technology (May 14), and Radiologic Technology (May 18) students. These moments represent the transition from classroom preparation to professional practice, particularly in critical healthcare fields that directly serve our community’s needs. These ceremonies represent a pinnacle moment for our students, and a deeply meaningful milestone for the faculty, staff, and administrators who have supported them along the way.
Another moving moment was the Gateway to College Graduation (May 28), recognizing students who have overcome significant barriers to complete their education. These students exemplify resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education.
Our role as a civic and economic partner remained strong throughout May. Engagements such as the Talk of the Commonwealth (May 4) and participation in the Worcester Economic Club (May 12) and Worcester Business Development Corporation Annual Meeting (May 13) provided opportunities to highlight the college’s impact on workforce development and regional growth.
I also continued active involvement in critical regional conversations, including the:
- Worcester Regional Research Bureau Board Meeting (May 5)
- Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce Board Meeting (May 27)
- Mayoral Task Force on Emerging Technologies (May 7), where discussions focused on innovation, workforce readiness, and positioning Worcester as a hub for emerging industries.
- Worcester Latino Dollars for Scholars (May 30), supporting increased access to higher education for Latino students and strengthening community-based educational equity efforts.
These engagements reinforce our commitment to aligning academic programs with workforce demands and advancing economic mobility for our students.
Within our campus community, the All College Forum (May 5) provided an opportunity to share updates, celebrate progress, and engage in dialogue around institutional priorities. The Latino Education Institute (LEI) Cabinet Meeting (May 14) advanced important leadership discussions focused on strengthening student success, promoting equity, and driving continuous improvement through strategic initiatives that support our Latinx students.
Additionally, my participation in the Apprenticeships for America Summit in Washington, D.C. (May 19–20) reflects our growing national presence in workforce innovation. This convening brought together education, industry, and policy leaders to explore scalable apprenticeship models, an area where we continue to expand programming to meet employer needs and support student career pathways.
Finally, a highlight of the month was Commencement (May 21), where we celebrated the achievements of our graduates and honored the perseverance that defines their journeys. Keynote speaker Dr. Matilde Castiel, a physician, public health leader, and former Commissioner of Health and Human Services for the City of Worcester, delivered deeply moving remarks that resonated with all in attendance. She praised graduates for their resilience and perseverance, and urged them to lead with compassion, reminding them that caring for others is at the heart of both their profession and their humanity. Her words left a lasting impression on graduates and guests alike.
This ceremony serves as both a culmination and a beginning, as our students move forward into careers or further education.
May’s full calendar illustrates the vibrancy of our institution and the depth of our impact, from academic excellence and workforce readiness to civic leadership and student support. As we move into the summer months, we do so with pride in our accomplishments and a continued focus on expanding opportunity, strengthening partnerships, and positioning our students and our region for long-term success.
Thank you to all who contributed to a remarkable close to the academic year.
