Student of the Month Shaynaya Rodriguez

Shaynaya Rodriguez is blossoming at Quinsigamond Community College. She has found an advisor she truly connects with, a program that inspires her, and a work-study position that is preparing her for a professional future.

After graduating from Burncoat High School in 2023, Shaynaya enrolled at QCC. She wasn't sure what path to take, and the first semester tested her resilience. She faced challenges navigating new platforms like Blackboard and struggled in one of her courses. On top of that, she ended up in the hospital for health reasons. Despite these obstacles, Shaynaya remained determined, leaning on her family for support and motivation.

“I look up to my parents a lot and want to make them proud,” she shared.

Shaynaya also found guidance in her SUCCESS Advisor, Christina Tzortzinis. Christina encouraged her to get involved on campus to stay engaged and build connections. Through that advice, Shaynaya secured a work-study position in the Career and Transfer Center.

In her role, she contributes to projects like the Career Closet, where students can access professional attire for job interviews. The experience has been transformative.

“I feel like I couldn’t have picked a better first job,” Shaynaya said. “The staff were patient with me and taught me so much about office etiquette.”

Academically, Shaynaya tapped into her creative side with a photography class. It went so well that she decided to enroll in the Interactive Media Design (IMD) program.

Shaynaya has found inspiration in her coursework and professors. She credits Adjunct Instructor of Interactive Media Emily Carroll and Associate Professor of Interactive Media Carolyn McGrath for their engaging teaching and dedication to student success. Building a portfolio in the IMD program has given her a glimpse into a bright future.

“I’m not just winging it,” she said. “My teachers have helped me gain confidence, and I really want to finish what I started.”

Reflecting on her journey so far, Shaynaya has gained a sense of independence and self-belief.

“I’ve learned that you have to do things for yourself,” she said.
