April has once again been filled with meaningful opportunities to connect with both our internal and external communities, represent the college, and advance key strategic priorities. It is also a time when the college shifts into high gear with preparations for commencement.
Earlier this month, we learned of Anna Maria College’s impending closure at the end of the semester. This was certainly heartbreaking for everyone in higher education and in the greater Worcester community. I convened our cabinet to quickly brainstorm ways we could support the students impacted by this news. In response, we promptly launched a dedicated webpage for Anna Maria students to provide clear information, resources, and assistance as they navigate next steps. This effort reflects our deep commitment to supporting students across our broader higher education community.
That same spirit of connection and community engagement carried into my participation in the First Wednesday Group on April 1. This long-standing, informal network of civic, business, academic, and nonprofit leaders in Worcester offers an important space to share perspectives, strengthen relationships, and discuss issues shaping the city’s future.
Continuing my Coffee Conversations with departments across campus, I met with the High School and Early College partnerships group. These conversations are always a wonderful way to connect directly with dedicated colleagues engaged in this important work, and to hear firsthand about both their successes and challenges.
In early April, I also had the privilege of participating in several key initiatives, including my monthly Talk of the Commonwealth interview, offering welcoming remarks for our New Employee Orientation, and chairing the NECHE Student Success Committee. This work directly supports our accreditation efforts and reinforces our commitment to student achievement.
April 7 was a particularly full and energizing day, featuring the QCC Foundation Executive Committee Meeting, our All College Forum, and participation in the ACCT Northeast Regional Meeting. I also had the pleasure of attending the Children’s School Art Exhibit Reception. This was a joyful reminder of the creativity and vibrancy within our extended college community.
Additionally, I represented the college at both the HERDI Conference and the AACC Annual Conference in Seattle, where I engaged with national leaders in higher education, explored emerging trends, and brought back insights to help inform our ongoing work.
Mid-month activities included Board of Trustees Subcommittee meetings on April 15, as well as continued opportunities to connect directly with students during Pizza with the President on April 16 at our Federal Street campus. This is always a highlight for me, and I gain valuable insight into our students and their lives.
Governance and leadership development remained a focus on April 21 with the QCC Foundation Full Board Meeting. From April 22–24, I participated in a NECHE Commission meeting, further advancing our accreditation work.
As the month drew to a close, I continued our student engagement efforts with additional Pizza with the President gatherings on April 28 and 29, alongside the Full Board of Trustees Meeting on April 28. During that meeting, I had the opportunity to officially welcome new trustee Flo LeClair. Flo is a proud QCC alumna, and we’re thrilled to welcome her to the Board of Trustees.
I concluded the month by attending the Presidents’ Council Meeting at Bristol Community College, joining colleagues from across the system to collaborate on shared priorities.
These engagements reflect the depth and diversity of our work, from student-centered initiatives and governance to external partnerships and national leadership. I am continually inspired by the dedication of our faculty, staff, and students, and I am grateful for the many opportunities to connect, listen, and lead together.
Thank you for your continued commitment to our mission and to one another. I look forward to the progress we will achieve together in the months ahead. And now, onward to commencement!
