A major congratulations is in order for the Women's Basketball team for making it to the 2026 NJCAA Region 21 tournament. Under the leadership of first-year Head Coach Johnny Diaz, the team welcomed a talented group of new recruits with varying levels of experience and developed impressive cohesion both on and off the court.

“We overachieved," said Diaz. “Our main goal was just to complete the season and grow together. For us, making the playoffs was the cherry on top. Even though we didn’t win, we were elated. It was an amazing experience.”

Among the season’s brightest stories was the rise of Morgan Jarrett, a player who didn't have much basketball experience prior to QCC, but made the All-Region 1st Team, a designation for the highest performing athletes. Morgan was the top third scorer in Region 21, averaging 18.9 points per game, and ranked in the top five in rebounds and top 10 for field‑goal percentage.

“People showed her love everywhere,” commented Diaz. “It felt amazing to know we helped push her to where she is now. When a player shows they can do something, I’m going to push them as far as I can without putting obstacles in their way.”

For Diaz, who started at QCC in 2024, coaching basketball has been a lifelong calling. A volunteer coach since age 17, he’s spent years immersing himself in the sport, building relationships, and guiding young athletes through the high school ranks. He credits much of the team’s success to the culture they’ve built: one rooted in trust, communication, and support.

“We make sure the team feels like a family,” Diaz shared. “We do bonding events, team dinners, we go to other games, and we have meetings where the players can share openly what went well that week, what didn’t, and how we can fix things together.”

With a strong recruiting class already building, and increased interest from local athletes, the coaching staff is working to raise awareness of QCC Athletics across the region.

“We would love the school community to support these young women. They work really hard to represent this college in a positive manner,” said Diaz.

He hopes to see more fans in the stands, more visibility across campus, and broader support for all QCC athletic programs. Showing support for student athletes is a fun way to stay connected and contribute to student success. Go Wyverns!
