Sara Lord is the embodiment of perseverance. This theater major knows that when times get tough, you lean into your support systems and get back on stage. Not only does Sara get back on stage, but she brings others with her.
Involved in school productions since 5th grade, Sara was quickly drawn to the inclusive nature of theater.
"It doesn't matter where you come from or if you're not welcome at home for who you are...you can always leave it at the doors of the theater," Sara remarked.
High school saw some academic struggles for Sara, but drama teachers noticed her talent and created opportunities that bolstered her confidence, like enlisting her to help other students learn the dance numbers in "West Side Story."
When Sara enrolled at QCC, she dove headfirst into the theater program and found a second family, led by Instructor of Theater Lauren Esper, who she described as "amazing" and "kind-hearted." Even while dealing with challenges like an eviction and having to retake a particularly challenging math course, Sara has leaned into her studies and remained positive.
"With theater, you are helping someone else escape whatever they’re going through. I’ve needed that in the past," she shared.
It was during QCC's production of "Almost Maine" that this sentiment was solidified. While rehearsals were underway, Sara had to leave because her mother got sick and passed away. Not only did Esper hold her spot in the play, but the show was dedicated to Sara's mother, who lived in Maine.
"I've been through a lot, but the theater group is a huge support network and one of the reasons I'm still going," Sara commented.
Sara wants to honor her mother by following her dreams to the fullest. Her goal is to end up on Broadway, but even if she's not acting, she wants to teach. Helping others and being kind is something her parents instilled in her from an early age and has become second nature.
In addition to the theater crowd, Sara has found another way to support the QCC community.
"When I found out I was eligible for work-study, I knew I wanted to do Student Life - they are superheroes," said Sara. "I want to be that guiding hand, helping people with questions."
Whether it's her name in lights or lighting the way for others, Sara aims to embody her high school theater group's motto: "Have courage and be kind."
