The Brothers and Keepers program is a multi-dimensional recruitment and support program designed to expand and serve Quinsigamond Community College male and trans male students of color who are seeking certificates, degrees, transfer or workforce training. The goal of the program is to increase the enrollment of men of color and to support their persistence through their academic goals and graduation. This program will attempt to align and build off the national model established by former President Barack Obama, titled My Brothers' Keeper.
Students may qualify if they:
- Have experience identifying as men of color, fathers, caregivers, first generation students, employees, veterans, et cetera
- Are motivated to educate themselves at a higher level and willing to be receptive to constructive input from instructors, mentors, advisors
- Struggle with navigating academia, connecting with peer groups, speaking English as a secondary language in college settings and might benefit from new perspectives on developing personal action plans
- Could use an advocate on campus to help find the resources available on campus regarding financial aid, academic advising, career development, or general human services
Commitment:
- Maintain regular contacts with your academic advisors, professors, and mentors: a minimum of three contacts per semester. At least one of these should be a face-to-face exchanges to discuss your successes and failures while here at the college. Build integrity and network.
- Attend scheduled Brothers & Keepers meetings and events; at least three events per semester (cultural, academic, professional, social, personal) Show commitment and purpose.
- Five-In person community engagements per year
