QCC President Luis G. Pedraja, Ph.D. was one of three people chosen to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a pre-game ceremony during the August 18 Wepa (WooSox) Game against Scranton.

President Pedraja, Dr. Matilde Castiel, commissioner of Health and Human Services and Jose Rivera, director of Operations for Latin American Health Alliance and manager of Café Reyes took to the field to show their pitching chops during the game that honored both Cuba and Mexico.

Throughout the 2021 season, the WooSox have been changing their name to “Los Wepas de Worcester” for certain home games. During these games, the ballpark embraces the Latino communities through music, food and community spotlights.

¡Wepa! is a Spanish expression of excited happiness and that was exactly what President Pedraja felt when he took part in the pre-ceremony festivities.

“I was thrilled to throw out the first pitch with Matie and Jose. It was a privilege to be a part of this special game and to celebrate the rich multicultural history that makes up our great city,” he said. “Inclusive events such as this one bring communities together, enabling us to learn more about each other and help to make equity a reality in Worcester.”
