QCC Celebrates Innovative Teaching
The Office of Distance Learning and Professional Development hosted the second annual Faculty Innovations and Best Practices Showcase on Wednesday, June 1. Forty-four faculty and staff members attended this event celebrating innovative teaching at the College.
In her welcome address, Vice President of Academic Affairs Pat Toney said, “Faculty play a key role in student retention and the QCC faculty lead the way. Today’s showcase provides a context for QCC faculty to share their best practices with each other, to learn about innovative teaching and to create community with colleagues.”
A variety of disciplines and all five Schools at the College were represented by the following faculty presentations:
- “Innovative Lessons: Grab the Student’s Attention at the Door,” Maryann Kania, Business Administration
- “Stress-Free Technological Tools that Enhance the Faculty and Student Experience,” Kristy Glover, Criminal Justice
- “Comics in the Classroom: Updating an Old Medium with New Technology,” John Stazinski, English
- “The Power of Inclusive Language,” Erin Connor, Occupational Therapy
- “Connecting with McGraw Hill’s Connect Plus,” Eric Mania and Judy Colson, Psychology
- “Data Mining with Google Spreadsheets,” Andria Schwortz, Integrated Science/Physics
- “Mindfulness Meditation and Contemplative Pedagogy,” Jean Kennedy, Human Services
“Encouraging Engagement and Real World Interaction With 3-D Objects,” Jacob Longacre, Electronics Engineering Technology
After three hours of formal presentations, attendees had a chance to engage in dialogue about teaching and learning with their peers and to talk further with the presenters.
