Worcester, MA, October 14, 2011 – Since 2009, Quinsigamond Community College has offered a course in Casino Gaming and Management, as part of its Hotel Restaurant Management (HRM) curriculum. With today’s announcement that the Massachusetts State Senate approved casino gambling yesterday, the stage is set for Governor Deval Patrick to sign the measure into law by the end of this year. With this new development, Quinsigamond Community College is uniquely positioned to provide trained personnel for the newly legislated Massachusetts industry.

The bill would allow casino gambling in Massachusetts, providing licensing for up to three resort-style casinos and one slots parlor. Proponents of the legislation say that the new industry could create more than 10,000 jobs for a state whose unemployment rate is stubbornly hovering around 7.4 %.

QCC’s program was developed with assistance from an Advisory Board consisting of personnel from both Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Mashantucket, CT and Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT, among others. The program also has established co-operative education components with both Foxwoods Casino and Mohegan Sun. The course is the first to position HRM students for employment in nearby casinos, cruise ships and resorts with gaming, and the eventuality of Massachusetts gaming opportunities.

The 3-credit “Introduction to Casino and Gaming Operations” course uses a combination of lecture, guest speakers, experiential learning and independent study to examine the theory, practice and business of gambling. Students discover how the gambling industry operates, analyze many of the popular games, and explore the phenomenon and impact of legalized commercial gaming. Graduates are prepared for the Certified Gaming Supervisor exam, a designation recognized worldwide as the lodging industry's highest acknowledgment of professionalism for supervisors in the gaming industry.

Successful QCC graduates are currently employed in high-level positions in many Connecticut and Nevada casinos.

Quinsigamond Community College is the most affordable higher education in Worcester County.
