Seven QCC Professors Awarded Honors

WORCESTER – Quinsigamond Community College is proud to announce that seven of its professors have recently been honored with various local and national awards.

Professor William McCarthy, coordinator of the Criminal Justice Program at QCC, was the 2006 recipient of the Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) Excellence in Online Teaching Award for his online course, “Response to Terrorism.”  The Sloan-C Excellence Awards are highly regarded in higher education, and are selected by a distinguished panel of judges consisting of college and university presidents and other highly regarded educators.

Professor Mary Newman was honored by the Christa McAuliffe-Challenger Center for Education and Teaching Excellence.  Carolyn McGrath, former QCC student and current Framingham State College undergraduate, was named a Christa McAuliffe Scholar, won a $1,000 scholarship, and named professor Mary Newman as the chief inspiration for her remarkable academic success.  Professor Newman is now listed on the “Christa Teachers” honor roll at the Christa McAuliffe-Challenger Center at Framingham State.

Listed in the 2006 edition of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, for overall teaching excellence, are:

  • Sharon Gillies, professor of Electronics and Computer Systems
  • John Lopiore, professor of Biology
  • Roger Meservey, professor of Biology
  • Ken Wong, professor History and Coordinator of the Liberal Arts Program and Social Sciences
  • Laraine Sommella, professor of English
