QCC Professor Wins Prestigious National Award

WORCESTER – Quinsigamond Community College Professor William McCarthy is the recipient of the 2006 Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) Excellence in Online Teaching Award for his online course, “Response to Terrorism.”

The Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) is a consortium of over 1000 institutions and organizations committed to quality online education.  The Excellence Awards, highly respected and regarded in higher education, are selected by a distinguished panel of judges consisting of college and university presidents and other highly regarded educators.  McCarthy will be presented his award at the 2006 Sloan-C Annual National Conference for Online Learning, in Orlando, Florida on November 8th

Professor McCarthy is Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Coordinator of the Criminal Justice Program. His course on terrorism, in addition to educating students about terrorist incidents involving nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons of mass destruction, also empowered students to make informed decisions about their learning style, which is beneficial to their academic careers.  His teaching, course materials, and technology use were all evaluated for the award, along with supporting documentation from administration, faculty, and students.

With this award, McCarthy has helped establish QCC’s online programs as among the best in the nation.  Indeed, Professor McCarthy stands alongside esteemed company, as the other Sloan-C Excellence in Online Teaching & Learning award winners hail from Pennsylvania State University, the University of Maryland, Ohio State University, and Kent State University.

Bill McCarthy earned his B.A. from Anna Maria College, his Masters Degree from Clark University, and his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University.
