Worcester—Quinsigamond Community College Board of Trustees Chair Mr. Roland  Gauthier today announced the results of the College’s presidential search.  Dr. Gail  Carberry of Springfield, MA was unanimously nominated to be QCC’s new president.   Ms. Sheila Sykes currently serves as interim president.  Dr. Carberry, whose nomination  will be brought to the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education at its June meeting for  approval, replaces Dr. Sandra Kurtinitis, who served the College for ten years.

Dr. Carberry comes to Quinsigamond from Springfield Technical Community  College (STCC), where she has been serving as Vice President of Institutional  Development since 1990.  In her long career at STCC, she also served as Director and as  Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs.  The Worcester native completed her  doctorate and master’s at the University of Massachusetts and her bachelor’s at  Worcester State College.

The 11 member Board conducted extensive interviews of three finalists based on  candidates brought forward to them by the presidential search team consisting of faculty,  administration, trustees, QCC’s foundation chair, and a student representative.  Each of the finalists visited the campus for a day last month for an exchange of interviews and  meetings with faculty, staff, and students.  In addition, trustee members made visits to  two of the candidates’ campuses for discussions with staff, students, and trustees who  have worked with them. “After considerable discussions on each of the finalists,”  commented Mr. Gauthier, “the Board was unanimous in its vote to nominate Dr.  Carberry.   We are pleased to bring her to the Board of Higher Education and look  forward to her final approval,” he said.  In speaking for the College, Ms. Sykes said, “We  are excited about the nomination of Dr. Carberry and look forward to working with her in  bringing Quinsigamond Community College to new heights.”

Upon hearing of the Board’s vote, Dr. Carberry reacted by saying, “I am at the same time ecstatic and honored to be nominated as Quinsigamond’s next president.” She is expected to start her new position on August 1.  Having raised three children, Dr.  Carberry will be moving to her native Worcester with her husband of 36 years, Donald,  and their five year old grandson, Brendan, whom they are raising.
