Directed Study
Directed Study is a way to pursue a topic that is not taught as a regular QCC course. Pending approval from the instructional dean, a faculty member, hired to oversee your Directed Study, determines the scope and nature of the experience, meets with you regularly throughout the semester, and evaluates your work at the end. Together you draft a Directed Study Learning Agreement, which forms the basis of your learning experience. You are expected to work independently during the semester.
If you are interested in earning credit through a Directed Study, here are your next steps:
- Discuss adding a Directed Study with your advisor to determine how it fits into your program requirements.
- Schedule an appointment with EBE staff.
- Complete an application for a Directed Study in Academic Support Services, Room 272A. Be sure to carefully complete the section entitled Proposal, which describes the nature of what you would like to learn.
- After your request has been approved by the appropriate instructional dean, and an instructor has agreed to serve as your faculty advisor, you will be notified by mail.
- You will be asked to register and pay for your credits.
- After payment verification has been received, your instructor will contact you and you may start your Directed Study.
- Together you and your instructor will complete and sign a Directed Study Learning Agreement, which will guide your learning throughout the semester. Return one copy to Academic Support Services (272A), provide one copy for the faculty member, keep the original for yourself and set up a meeting schedule for the semester.
- It is expected that you will complete all work during the semester of registration. As with a regular course, if work is not completed the instructor will issue an Incomplete (“I”), which must be made up according to QCC academic timelines.
