Challenge Examination

Challenge Examinations enable you to earn credit through testing. The examination is developed and administered by a Quinsigamond faculty member who is recommended by the appropriate instructional dean. You cannot challenge a course if proficiency examinations such as CLEP are available. After a successful challenge exam, the course credit and a grade of “P” is recorded on your transcript. However, the credits are not computed in your grade point average. A Challenge Examination cannot be taken for the following purposes:

  1. To expunge a failure in a course at QCC or elsewhere.
  2. To attempt to raise a low grade in a course completed at QCC.
  3. To erase a previously obtained unsatisfactory score on any of the subject.

To successfully challenge a course at QCC, you must receive a score of "C" or higher. You are not given a letter grade for a challenge; rather a “P” (pass) will be noted on your transcript. Program restrictions apply.

If you are interested in earning credit through a Challenge Exam, here are your next steps:

  • Review the catalog description of the course you wish to challenge.
  • If you are comfortable with the subject matter, complete an application for a Challenge Exam in Room 272A.
  • Once approved by the instructional dean, you will be notified by mail to come in to register and pay for your credits.
  • The instructor hired to provide the Challenge Exam will initiate contact with you, provide you with information, and schedule the exam.

If you should fail the exam, it is advised that you complete a withdrawal form. These are available in the Registrar’s Office.
