ranked Springfield Technical Community College 74-72 and second
ranked Gateway Community College 76-61 to win the title.
In the
championship game against Gateway, Maurice Horton scored a game-high
22 points. Sims added 18 points and seven rebounds. Charles Horton
scored 11 points including two three-pointers, and Dennis Williams
chipped in 10 points off the bench.
The
victory propelled the Chiefs to the National Tournament where,
aided by Maurice Horton's 31 points, they
defeated last year's national champs, North Lake College, 72-67.
National Tournament
The Chiefs subsequently fell to eventual national champs Sullivan County
Community College 83-76 in the semifinals.
Horton finished the
year as the fourth leading scorer in the nation with an average of 23.5
points a game. He also finished second in the country in rebounds and
21st in steals with an average of 13.2 and 2.7 respectively.
Meanwhile, Sims ranked first in the nation in
steals, ninth in assists and 23rd in scoring. For the year, Sims
averaged 19.9 points, 6.8 assists, and 5.5 steals.
