In September, the club hosted a guest speaker, Robert Kinscherff, Ph.D., who explored the relationship between violence and mental illness. Repeated incidents of mass shooting by persons believed to be mentally ill have led media portrayals, public perception and political debate to increasingly define the “violence problem” or “gun violence problem” as a mental illness problem. This presentation presented a research-based model for understanding the relationship between violence and mental illness that is crucial for taking effective steps to limit violence in our communities.

Dr. Kinscherff is a nationally and internationally recognized clinical/forensic psychologist and an attorney. He has spent more than 30 years at the intersections of psychology and law with a particular focus upon violence, childhood adversities and trauma, and mental illness among children, adolescents and adults.
