Scholarship Luncheon Celebrates Students and Donors

May 2016

The QCC Foundation hosted its second annual Scholarship Luncheon on May 16 to recognize students for their hard work and scholarship donors for their support and participation.

In the past 10 years, funds have grown from 19 scholarship funds to 58 funds, which allows the foundation to make 200 awards every year, totaling more than $260,000. About 30 students attended the luncheon to be honored for awards during the current academic year.

“Scholarships are critical since they help students surmount both academic and non-academic barriers to success, by helping them cover tuition, fees, books, transportation and emergencies,” said Jaqui Diggs, Vice President of the QCC Foundation and Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee. She shared inspiring quotes from scholarship applications about students who appreciate how scholarships help them afford college.

About 80 people attended the luncheon, including those receiving scholarships and their families, scholarship donors and members of the QCC Foundation and QCC Trustees.

At the luncheon, QCC staff and faculty who have lost loved ones during the past two years were also recognized. The 10 family members have been memorialized by donations from the Office of President at QCC and President Gail Carberry personally.

The foundation raises money for some scholarships through events, such as the golf tournament and spelling bee. Other scholarships are memorial funds or endowed scholarships, or supported by different QCC departments or organizations.
