WORCESTER, MA; May 21, 2007 –   Quinsigamond Community College will host the tenth annual Massachusetts Middle School Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, June 2 . Sponsored by Cabot Corporation of Boston, the Fair showcases research projects of middle school students throughout the Commonwealth.

More than 200 students are presently registered, including the top forty students from each of the six middle school regional fairs which took place during April and May.  Students competing in the State Middle School Science & Engineering Fair at QCC will have the chance to enter the national science competition sponsored by the Discovery Channel, held in Washington DC in October.

Judging of the students’ projects begins at 9:00 am. All students and their projects are evaluated by three judges.  The process focuses on six criteria, with students earning points within each of the following categories:  Scientific Approach, Knowledge of Project Area, Thoroughness, Written Records and Reports, Ingenuity and Creativity, and Visual Presentation.

The public exhibition opens at 1:00 pm and the Awards Recognition Ceremony begins at 4:00 pm. Everyone is cordially invited.

“We extend our gratitude and appreciation to Quinsigamond Community College for its commitment to this group of young scientists and for fostering and creating a greater awareness of opportunities in science and technology,” said Sandra Mayrand, Fair Chair and Director of the Regional Science Resource Center at University of Massachusetts Medical School. “Using an inquiry-based, hands on learning process, these students have produced some fine work, and this is an excellent opportunity for them to display their achievements,”

About the Massachusetts State Science & Engineering Fair Inc.  (MSSEF)

The Massachusetts State Science & Engineering Fair seeks to engage students in the inquiry and exploration of science, engineering and technology. Established more than 50 years ago by dedicated members of the educational community and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, MSSEF now supports several hundred competitive and non-competitive fairs involving 50,000 Massachusetts students each year. A culminating statewide fair is held in the spring at MIT for high school students (May 4 & 5, 2007), followed by a Middle School Fair at Quinsigamond Community College (June 2, 2007) in Worcester.  These statewide Fairs annually showcase outstanding student projects, awarding college scholarships and other prizes for the top-scoring students and teams.

Students participating in MSSEF develop self-learning techniques, increase self-respect and expand their social skills and awareness. MSSEF is proud of its role in helping fuel the supply of bright and talented scientists, engineers and researchers.
