WORCESTER –   Anita Depatie of Auburn, a student at Quinsigamond Community College, has been awarded two national scholarships from the Phi Theta Kappa scholastic honor society.

The first $1,000 scholarship is through the Coca-Cola Two-Year Colleges Scholarship Program and Phi Theta Kappa, the two-year college scholastic honorary organization.   The Coca-Cola Scholars Program is one of the most recognized and respected corporate sponsored scholarships in America.

The second $1,000 scholarship was awarded by the Leaders of Promise scholarship program of Phi Theta Kappa. It is designed to provide financial resources to help defray educational expenses while enrolled in a two-year college in order to develop leadership potential through participation in Society programs.

“I was thrilled when I received the news.  I just finished general studies classes at QCC and will be starting Nursing in September.  These scholarships will help defray expenses,” Anita said.

“The Coca-Cola Two-Year Colleges Scholarship Program gives support and encouragement to an under-served population of college students,” said J. Mark Davis, President of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.  “These fine students, who often juggle school, work and family, continue to give back to their communities through volunteer service.”

Anita has certainly juggled her share of responsibilities.  Between a part-time job and being a mother, she is involved in a number of community programs. Although her inspiration to enter the nursing field came from her work as a member of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) in Auburn, where she lives, Anita has also volunteered for Special Olympics, Girls Scouts, and raised money for the Multiple Sclerosis Challenge Walk.

Anita will turn 45 years old this week, but she has no intentions of slowing down.  After graduating from QCC, Anita plans to continue her nursing education at UMass Amherst, where she will work toward a Bachelor’s Degree, and ultimately go into nursing administration or teaching.
