Worcester—Quinsigamond Community College’s Interim President Sheila Sykes announced recently that two second year Dental Hygiene students won first place at the Yankee Dental Congress 31 Student Table Clinics Competition, a national dental convention held in Boston every year.

Evelyn Bosworth and Theresa Martinez took the first prize for “Anchors Away.”  The students’ presentation consisted of information about temporary anchorage devices for orthodontics as a new way of using micro screws to move teeth and replace headgear and help with patient’s compliance.  This would alleviate the need for patient’s to wear elastics.  Their research was conducted with the assistant of local orthodontist’s, Dr. John Walker.

Jessica Sindoni and Dawn Hicks also represented QCC and presented “The Missing Link,” about how periodontal disease contributes to systemic diseases such as heart disease.

According to Joyce Cooney, Coordinator and Professor of Dental Hygiene, “In October 2005 we held our Dental Hygiene Departments' Table Clinic Competition. We had 12 table clinics covering a variety of scientific dental topics and we chose the top two winners, to represent QCC at the Yankee Dental Congress.  Our students presented their clinics along with many other Dental Hygiene Programs and Anchors Aweigh was chosen as the best of all the table clinics. We are all so proud of both of our teams and especially proud of our first place winners.”
